First Amendment Clinic Director Clare R. Norins was featured on Fox 5 Atlanta regarding the differences between peaceful protest and civil disobedience.

“We have a long history of peaceful protests and demonstrations leading to social justice changes and reforms in our country.” Norins said. “The right to collectively assemble and voice disagreement with the status quo, those are essential First Amendment rights that need to be respected and safeguarded.”

Following the arrest of a Valdosta, Georgia protestor for carrying a sign deemed by the local sheriff to be obscene, Norins spoke to WCTV Eyewitness news regarding the constitutionally protected right of protestors to express themselves using profanity.

As famously noted by the Supreme Court in Cohen v. California (1971), “one man’s vulgarity is another’s lyric.”
